The airport began operating on virgin land near the suburban village of Popenovka in 1933. The aircraft fleet consisted of three U-2 aircraft. Civil aviation in Kyrgyzstan received its greatest development in the 60s of the 20th century. At that time, An-2, Il-14, Il-18, An-24 transport aircraft and Mi-8 helicopters were used. Frunze Airport was closed in the 70s after the completion of Manas Airport.
