Institute of Geology
Photo by Vladimir Petrov, 2003. Institute of Geology of the Academy of Sciences of the Kirghiz SSR, 1990, photo by Vladimir Petrov. The building is located on Dzerzhinsky Avenue (architect P.P. Ivanov). The building was built as a pedagogical college and was completed in 1941. But classes for students have never been held here. With the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, it housed a military hospital and the biological department of the USSR Academy of Sciences and the academic library of the Paleontological Institute, evacuated from Moscow. On the basis of the Biological Department of the USSR Academy of Sciences, KirFAN was formed in 1943 - the Kyrgyz branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. For ten years it was in this building and several streets in the city are named after scientists who worked here: A.N. Bach, K.I. Skryabin, D.I. Shcherbakov, M.M. Adyshev. K.I. Scriabin headed this branch and the academician’s activities are immortalized with a memorial plaque. The ceremonial meeting regarding the creation of Kir FAN took place on August 13, 1943 in the summer theater of Panfilov Park with the participation of V.L. Komarov - President of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1954, KirFAN was transformed into the Academy of Sciences of the Kirghiz SSR.
